The Art of Display: How to Choose and Place Artwork in Your Home

At Barrett Castle Lighting we are delighted to launch our new artwork collection which is sure to brighten and delight your home.

Art has the power to completely transform a space—adding personality, sparking conversation, and tying a room’s design together. Whether you're drawn to bold abstract prints, calming landscapes, or expressive portraits, the way you display your artwork is just as important as the piece itself.

'Last Light' by Michael Sanders is a painting that exemplifies his ability to convey the transient beauty of natural light. It's a calming landscape print that is sure to transform any room. Discover in-store at Barrett Castle Lighting for only £120

At Barrett Castle Lighting, we know that a beautiful piece of art can elevate any room. But where should it go? And what size works best? Here’s a simple guide from our team to help you hang your art like a pro.

1. Pick the Right Wall

Not all walls are created equal when it comes to art. The key is to find a space that allows your piece to shine without competing with too much clutter.

  • Living Room: Above the sofa is a classic spot. Choose a piece (or set of pieces) that spans about 2/3 the width of the furniture below it for visual balance.
  • Hallway or Staircase: These are perfect places for a gallery wall. Mix and match sizes for a casual, collected feel.
  • Dining Room or Kitchen: A single bold print can add drama and colour to these often-overlooked spaces.
  • Bedroom: A calming abstract above the bed can create a soothing focal point.

Add a touch of fun with these unique 'Maisie' and 'Marley' artwork prints by Quinn Russell which would suit a range of interiors, including your hallway or living room to name but a few. Discover in-store now, they are only £115 each.

2. Size Matters

When it comes to artwork, size is everything. Too small, and it gets lost. Too large, and it can overwhelm the room.

  • Small Wall? Go for smaller pieces or a collection of mini prints in a grid or salon-style layout.
  • Large Wall? Don’t be afraid to go big. One oversized piece can create a real wow factor. Alternatively, try a pair or trio of coordinating prints.
  • Above Furniture? Keep the artwork around 2/3 the width of the furniture. Leave about 6-8 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.

3. Height = Eye Level

A common mistake is hanging artwork too high. Aim for the centre of the piece to be at eye level—about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. If it’s going above furniture, allow a comfortable visual gap between the furniture and the artwork, so it feels connected, not floating.

This print 'Stolen Moment' By Nicola Jane Rowles is illustarted at eye level - here we can see how it is placed above a side board with a sufficient gap so that it is not floating. Discover this beautiful print in-store at only £55.

Let Your Walls Talk

Art is personal—there’s no "one size fits all" rule. Choose what speaks to you, and display it with care and confidence. Whether you're refreshing one wall or curating a whole-home gallery, a well-placed picture can make all the difference.

Our framed Floral Fantasia print By Jane Morgan is a wonderful way to bring the outdoors inside, with colourful wildflowers in pastel shades which are sure to bring joy and uplift any wall. This example is only £99
